It now serves as a Haunted Attraction but the property it is on has a much darker past. Sully Pool in South Park

As you wind around the back roads of South Park in Allegheny County  you will come across Hundred Acres Manor a Haunted Attraction  used during Halloween.

But this property served a much darker Past during the era of Jim Crow

It was a Swimming Pool known as Sullys Pool  Officially Hundred Acres Pool  but more commonly known as " The Ink Well"  which is where Blacks where forced to swim and have a fun day at the pool instead of the big beautiful  Corrigan Road Pool which was suppose to be open to blacks but they where often discouraged from using it do to Unofficial Jim Crow Laws in Pa. both by Patrons and County Park Police

I remember as a young kid in early 70s swimming in Corrigan when attending the Altar Boys Picnic for St. Basil's  and there where a couple black kids but not in 60s when I was a child

Corrigan closed permanently in 1977 due to too many leaks and cost to maintain  it. Became   a skate park for a while and now sits abandoned and Sullys closed after the wave pool opened in 80s.

While there was also a North Park Pool in Allegheny County  I have never heard of racial problems at this pool but it was much further to get to which is why Corrigan was more popular.

A shameful past  of Allegheny County's history and now long forgotten as no one younger than 50 would even remember the pools .

There needs to be memorial markers telling what went on at both pools so this shameful chapter is never forgotten and repeated .

A Strange Half Finished office Building along Lincoln Highway in Jeanette

If you spend any amount of time going up and down the Lincoln Highway also known as US 30 there is a strange unfinished office building as you pass thru the outskirts of Jeanette Pa. across from what was Monsour Medical Center  which is now an empty lot.

now demolished Monsour Medical hospital

It has been sitting like that since at least late 1980s  its just a block and steel shell with windows not even all doors installed. So whats the story ?

Well back in the 1958 4 brothers  all   Physicians  William ,Roy ,Robert and Howard  opened up

The modern Monsour Medical Center.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsour_Medical_Center

But the hospital seemed to always be burdened  with debt. Partially to do with the brothers disagreeing on how to run the hospital and who exactly was in change and constantly being dogged by regulators for not meeting regulations   .

One day the brother filed for bankruptcy and up and closed hospital leaving everything behind causing a hazmat problem  and improper disposal of patients records.

The office building across the street was to be an expansion of the hospital featuring Doctors Offices and such  . but between not being able to pay bills and internal arguments it to was abandoned and at this point the property is still mired in muck of who owns what.

So it will just sit like it has since at least the 80s.

Why would a Public Lake and Dam in Ohio have a sign Warning Keep Away Periodic Posionous Gas ?

I was recently traveling thru Ohio after stopping to see a friend when I decided to travel the Ohio Byway Route Its a great weekend drive past Farm and field when I came across a sign for Clendenning Dam So I had to check it out  .

But its one of the strangest designs for Man Made  Lakes and Dams I have ever seen to make it even more intriguing where signs warning about Poisonous  Gas ? keep out  So whats the Story

Well this lake built by and maintained by  The Army Corp of Engineers in 1933 out of an old Quarry  to help control flooding in the area  has a most unusual Spillway set up.

https://kayakingacrossohio.blogspot.com/2015/10/clendening-lake-wisteria-wisteria-and.html

First to even get to see the lake and dam you go by the Spillways  exiting point where you see the signs  then have to wind around the mountain they cut thru to make the spillway tunnel  ,

Which is where the problem begins instead  this spillway was drilled thru hard rock and since this is Coal Mining area the local coal seams will occasionally leak out  Sulfide into the lake which when it combines with lake water produces Hydrogen Sulfide    which had a very strong rotten egg smell and is very hazardous.. and concentrates around the spillway area

The lake itself which is undeveloped and beautiful  had no such smell when I stopped to look around and take  pictures  but with this years drought there is a warning to Kayakers and Fisherman about strong plume developing.

If you go to visit the lake Cell Service is very limited and there is a small picnic area with playground with Restrooms and Two 1.1 mile trails to hike
