Plenty of Legendary Characters from W. Pa some myth others from real life.

If you ever spent any time around Pittsburgh you more than likely heard the legends about people like Joe Magarac the mighty Steel Worker  who saved the steel industry  and Mike Fink the King of the Keel Boaters  and Johnny Apple Seed.
As I drive thru the town of Braddock past USS Edgar Thompson Plant there is a statue to  Joe Magarac The Legendary Steel Worker who could bend railroad rails with his bare hands and  allowed himself to be consumed by the flames of a steel ladle to make the steel strong and pure to build a new steel mill in late 1800's.

Joe Magarac Statue at Edgar Thompson Works
There is even a fantastic stained glass window which lights up at night on an office building in downtown Pittsburgh at 6th & Wood Street

But While Joe Magarac is a made up legend

Mike Fink the king of the Keel Boaters is based on a real life person .

Before the system of locks and dams where put in place to make the rivers navigable they used keel boats which where meant for a one way trip from Pittsburgh  to points south  where they where then disasembled and used to build new structures.  Powered by powerful men with long wooden poles which sank into the river mud and provided the push. Among these men was Mike Fink.
A marksmen Indian scout and brawler who they said could take on a whole boat full of men by himself .and shoot the feather off a Indians head at a 100yards.
Of course plenty of Mikes legendary exploits have become Tall tales along the way  much in the way Joe Majarac could bend steel rails in his bare hands.

On the other hand Johnny AppleSeed's  Tales are real

He was a well known nurseryman who planted Apple trees thru out Ohio, Pa , Indiana and other states and said to have lived in Pittsburgh on grants Hill at one time . while the legend has him just randomly throwing and planting trees he instead formed small nursery's where trees where properly and carefully raised.
He is the reason we have so many fantastic apple variety's to this day.

Yes Western Pa.   is full of Tall tales and legends and these are just 3 of them.

Its a Fancy Coffee House now but in the 80's it was a seedy bar where a deadly drug China White was dealt which helped to kill 22 individuals.

Its called China White  a powerful synthetic  mix of Heroin and Fenteynyl  .
one Pittsburgh based Chemist in Aspinwall would use his skills to make it and end up killing 22 and overdosing many more.

The outbreak started and was traced  to  its distribution  in what was once a  nondescript  Seedy Bar on Pittsburgh's North Side now a coffee shop and Deli  at Federal and West streets  where people get there morning Caffeine fix  a perfect place to distribute drugs as the bar had several ways in and out and many twists and turns inside. When you rode by in summer the doors where open and you could look inside its dark interior

By at  the time it was over in 1988  a chemist who was making  the drug at his residence and distributing the drug  from this former bar was arrested at his Aspinwall residence after   22 deaths where attributed to the deadly wave of overdoses as junkies flocked to try the new dangerous drug.

I was doing work and teaching  on he North Side at this time and saw many times Junkies being picked up by medics   in the back alleys and parking lots and along East Ohio and federal after passing out from a fix.
Thankfully 2 outstanding Pittsburgh Narcotic Detectives I once meet  Barry and Fox
where able to infiltrate and break this case wide open with help from the DEA and needless to say it came as a shock when police surrounded a residence in quiet and upscale community of Aspinwall a few miles up the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh.

As people come in to get there daily morning cup of Jo   these days many would be shocked to know this deadly wave of drug overdoses started right there on that corner.

A strange Wedding Tradition of Pushing a Bride in Wheelbarrow in Carrick

Strange and fun In Deed Pushing your newly weeded bride in her gown in a wheelbarrow down 300 block of Copperfield St.
When I was a kid I got to see this strange tradition along 300 block the more level section of Copperfield Street a very steep street in Carrick 29th Ward of City of Pittsburgh  which people have actually skied down in winter time. Starting at the top at Brownsville Road.

How it started and why no one seems to know but some one started the tradition of showing off there new bride to the neighborhood probably on a dare or as a joke and it has been passed down now for many years.

So if you ever find your self driving thru carrick and see such a thing going on now you know why.

Unfortunately the google image does not show the steep hill  to right that well

A deadly Practice of the Amish in Lighting of fires in stoves in there homes.

When you ride thru rural areas of Pennsylvania , Ohio and New york or Indiana you may encounter a Horse Drawn buggy being driven by an Amish man with plain clothing straw hat and beard.
a throw back to the days of old this is not something they do on the weekend for tourists this is there religion with roots that go back to Germany.Which prohibits them from using modern conveniences.

There homes have no running water , electricity gas or telephones. They live like the early pioneers of yesterday. There only educated to the 8th grade.
They have no Smoke Detectors in there homes thou some have wind up heat detectors and entire family's have been killed in night time fires . When this happens in the community they say it is Gods Will it has happened when asked why they do not have Smoke Detectors which require AC or battery power.

If they need to travel a far distance they hire a non Amish individual to transport them in a in van with shades.
They shun modern ways of living but they do embrace the use of modern hospitals if it is life threatening. Those of us not with in the Amish community are refereed to as" The English ".

With this in mind from time to time in the papers you will see where an Amish Man or women has been seriously injured or even died from burns they received lighting or keeping lighted there Wood Stove when they have thrown too much kerosene into it.
The latest incident happening in Indiana County Pa. where an Amish gentleman lighting his stove severely burned himself and his son's and had to be Life flighted to a Pittsburgh Hospital with Special Burn ward, and they will endure much pain and recovery after suffering life threatening 3rd degree burns. One of the sons has unfortunately passed

While common sense would tell you not to do this taking a small cup of kerosene and throwing it on to an already lighted fire. or overfilling the stove with kerosene when first lighting it This is common practice in Amish Country and all too often it results in serious burn injury's to mostly women which they often try to fix with home remedy before arranging for professional care.

I asked a local fire marshal about this and he tells me yes He has talked to Pa. State Fire Marshals at seminars , who work these rural areas and despite there best efforts to educate the Amish community against this it goes on all the time.
Now I have been told by those (English) who live by or have vacation homes near Amish community's that they find the Amish to be extremely stupid people because of all the in breeding with in the community as they do not marry outside there community's. and end up marrying cousins etc. But I do not know if this is the case or even the cause of what is happening.
The Amish I have encountered on Job sites are very level headed but are set in there ways of following the rules of there Order and Bishop who is the figure head in there community and some community's are more lenient than others. Where they will allow Amish to have a phone
in there outhouse or use a generator to run a machine in there Wood/Furniture shop.
But there are some who are very strict not even allowing the use of the orange triangle on the rear of there buggy's to warn motorists as bright colors are forbidden.
In a world where Fire Safety Vs Religion
Religious freedom always comes first with the Amish community so all we can do is make suggestions that they follow safe fire practices which are one of the biggest dangers in there community's since they use candles , kerosene lights , wood stoves and fireplaces
