Secret Societies at WVU seemed to be the in thing in early 1900's

From 1908 to some time in the 1930's it seems West Virginia University Home of  the  Mountaineers had a thing for Secret Society's Like the Skull and Bones Society at Yale.

One of the more secret sects was the Rejetos

An all women's group who never showed there faces in the schools year book. not much is known or to be found about this secret society from a hundred years ago  and what their purpose was.So many of these social groups  from back then in the communities and schools have completely disappeared and now only leave questions  when a mysterious photo shows up

However WBOY  News seems to have cracked this one

The day Yellow Snow fell on Dormont pa and surrounding communitys

Yellow Snow you say well that's nothing new just follow any dog walking in it.

But this time it was different it was falling from the sky and coated everything  and that's exactly what happened in winter of  1960  when Yellow feathery looking things started falling all over. At first thought to be an unknown insect it was later determined to be seedlings from a sycamore tree known as a London plain and for some reason it did it during the winter instead of in the spring.

To my knowledge it has not happen since this incident in 1960

Was David Croyle Framed on Child Molestation Charges ?

I meet Rev. David Croyle  back in the early 20s when he was interested in purchasing  the then WAVL 910 AM Radio station in Apollo Pa.

He asked me if I could stay on and engineer for him  while he was under a LMA agreement with the current owner and he eventually asked me to do some engineering and security work for him at his location in Kittaning where he owned WTYM 1380 AM.

Unfortunately the agreement with WAVL fell thru and station was sold to some one else but stayed on their as engineer and for David.

David owned several joined buildings in downtown Kittaning  on N Jefferson Street .One store front was his community Newspaper operations and also served as an small entertainment venue in the rear

the next store front was the family life chapel where he was minster the next store front was the Radio station Operations which included a low power TV studio and finally the last storefront was his apartment and storage

I took care of station engineering and also did minor electrical work for David in the buildings and  fixed minor computer networking issues when he had them on a casual as needed basis.

Many in the community did not like David they saw him as a grifter and conman and a little on the weird side.

But David was a good man who did a lot to help his community.

He Ran for and became a Armstrong County Commissioner and that's when the problems started .

Including several break ins and having to update his security alarms and cameras.  Some one was not happy he had become commissioner and was determined to see him done in.

But Davids world would come crashing down 2 days before he was ready to launch his new FM translator  when he and a Fire Marshal from community across river from his where Arrested

David had little money for defense and a friend put up most of the money to defend him.

While he was out on bail David came to my fathers funeral and swore to me he was innocent and was being set up by those who he had dirt on who where corrupt and stealing from the public. including  high ranking Armstrong  politicians and Judges .

Davids attorney asked for and was denied a change of venue this should have been automatic grounds for appeal due to fact David was a commissioner.but appeals judge ignored Davids appeal after his conviction.

After reading the trail transcripts I saw many legal challenges which where missed and should have been explored including the Grinder Account a gay meet up site  on Davids computer which I never saw when working on them for him.

Plus knowing there had been several small break-ins that as far as I know David reported  to police  it would have been easy to plant  evidence.

The 14 year old in the case also had a history of lying and false accusations according to David who hired him to deliver copy's of the paper he printed.

David claimed photos of him supposedly having sex with the kid where not true and he had marks on him he could prove that it was not him.

But despite all the questionable stuff to the case David was convicted and served his sentence of 5 years  and was denied an appeal ..The fire Chief was convicted and committed suicide while on bail.

Davids friend who paid for his defense and kept his apartment paid for called me and said he had He developed cancer while in prison and asked for compassionate release again he was denied and he died just a few days after release.

David swore  the truth would come out by Gods own hand when he was  released ,and who knows Karma is one of those strange things.

Was David lying to me the whole time ? who knows and now we will never know . Hopefully some group or person in the years to come who has the time and money to take a hard look at the case come along and prove or disprove his accusations .

In the mean time I hope David and the victim have found peace.

.

Ever pass an old home and get the feeling something terrible happened in it. Well your feelings are right if you passed this one in Indiana County Pa.

I use to drive a customers box truck and make a delivery for him  almost every Friday or Saturday in the summer from Pittsburgh to Altoona for almost 20 years.

In doing so I often took US422 thru Indiana County and would pass this old house. sometimes when i took a shortcut off US422 in Strongstown

Its been sitting empty forever and is badly deteriorated and yes it has a History a Bad one.

In May the 5th of 1928  The son of Nanty Glos Police chief and 2 associates  planned on robbing the owner of the home . of his moonshine

The chiefs son ended up killing the old farmer Frank Carney  with a blow to the head with his fathers Black jack  after luring him out to the barn thinking his cattle where in some kind of distress .

all 3 where found and tried and given  life sentences

The property is watched by neighbors and trespassers will be prosecuted.

A Real Life Hatchet Man in W.Pa.

There are many tales of hatchet murderer around W. Pa but most there is nothing to it just a legend like the Wood Chopper in Penn Hills

But in fact there was a real life Murder in Cannonsburg Pa.

https://sites.psu.edu/kps5504passion/page/2/

That brought about the legend of Hatchet Jack

The murders occurred  in 1973 by   Sherman Richardson who was Sherman Sr son   who was 31 at the time it  occurred on 355 Hahn Drive.

It all started after an argument over a glass of Orange Juice . Jack asked his sister to get him

and the 2 got into a tangle and after their father hearing the argument  came into the kitchen

and told jack he had 30 days to gather his stuff and get out he had had enough .

Mr Richardson had lost his wife only a few months earlier and his daughter came to stay and take of there mother and then her father

Jack in a fit of rage went up stairs got a 20 gauge shotgun .and fire into the heads of his sister and father killing them both instantly .He then used a chain saw to cutup and dispose of the bodies on the property near an orchard.

Jack was tried and convicted and eventually was paroled after good behavior   and went on to lead a normal life  and married and had a job .

He moved back to Pa shortly before he passed away at 72 years of age

The Sad Story behind Gretchens Lock

As you travel along US 30 Thru East Liverpool Ohio you will see a sign for Beaver Creek State Park It a great place to learn history and also learn about the Sandy and Beaver  Lock & Canal System which ran thru the park  . While the main part of the park is fascinating to see with its Recreated and Original Structures there is a smaller less known part of the park known as Gretchen Lock. just down the road from where Pretty Boy Floyd was captured and killed by law enforcement .

This lock part of which still remains in Spruceville Ohio on Echo dell Road  has a very sad and haunting story to it.

Named after  Gretchen Gill whose father was one of the engineers who helped design the system of locks and canals

https://www.carnegie.lib.oh.us/gretchen

The story goes that Mr Gill his wife and daughter traveled from Europe  to  America  and along the way he lost his wife who was buried at sea .

While the lock was being built Gretchen would soon pass from Malaria and was buried in coffin inside the lock  stone walls .

In 1837 Mr. Gill resigned from the  project due to financial  panic going on in the states and returned to Europe accompanied by his daughters corpse  after removing it from the lock.

Unfortunately a severe storm took the voyage of him and his daughter the the deep depths of the sea

when the boat they where sailing on floundered. It was after this happened it was said that on Gretchen's Birthday she would come back to haunt the lock and area .

Those who have seen her report a young girl in a white dress  some times crying.

After hiking back to the lock a little over a mile from parking lot  it is  in deed beautiful as it is haunting

Supposedly work crews in the park have been scared to work around the lock itself   and in the summer time there is a annual Gretchen Lock Fest  open to the public. where you can hike back tour the lock and hear the ghostly stories

This years Gretchen Fest will be Saturday August 9th 2 to 10 PM

still even more events
