I spend a lot of time up in the back roads of northern Western PA and have passed this memorial on Old Route 322 which was being built in 1922 when workers discovered an unknown individuals grave stone this is why such an unusual road side marker can be found in Venango County in Canal Twp.
Photo's Credit Bob Mooney |
Originally called the Lakes to Sea's Highway the stone was found under where the road was being cut thru
But who is this individual H. A. Smith because as of current research there are no records on his death and burial
Was he a Pioneer, Road Agent / Highway Bandit Trapper hunter , Revolutionary Soldier Missionary or man of the cloth ? and how did he die and where his remains actually found ?
The only clues are what on the marker plate and obviously everyone alive at the time have passed .
Hopefully Hopefully Bob Mooney of the Pennsylvania History Face Book Page will find answers if he does I will update this article
